New Meeting Place for Yarinacocha

This is our new church building in Yarinacocha...okay, it isn't new, but it is new to us...we have someplace to call "home" now, and the people are glad too. Maria and her husband, Wilmer are who we rent the room from. This day was her birthday, and the day that we moved everything into our "Temple". The little kids in the neighborhood come over everytime they see the door open, so we have been able to help some of them with homework and just have a chance to talk to them too.

Empe "welcoming" people to the "templo".

My first Sunday School class in the new room. These are three cousins, Levi, Tricia, and Fresia. Empe teaches the younger kids in the front row.

This is our first service in the new room. We had 23 people in that service. Some others passed by and watched for a while at the door or window, and some of our regulars had to stand at the window the whole time because there was no more seating. That little room was hot with that many people. So, the next Sunday, September 12, we had the kids make handheld fans in Sunday School, like we used to get from funeral homes and use at camp meeting, as an offering to the church (we had talked about offering in the Tuesday service). Because many of them don't have money to give, but they all have talents they can give, we thought this may be a good way to let them help with things that the new church needed. The fans turned out really good...we haven't taken pictures of them yet because the glue was still drying when we left. I want to take pictures of them with the kids that made them and post those pictures.
As I said, we talked about offering in the Tuesday night service. This is a big deal because now we have rent to pay... anyway, we talked about tithe and offerings, and I spent a good portion of the week making this wall hanging. It has three rows of pockets for envelopes...tithe envelopes. Here, a person has the same tithe envelope for a whole year. It has a chart on it for them to write how much money they put in each week or month, and they put it in the offering. Then, when the money is taken out of the envelope, the envelope is returned to the wall hanging so that they can pick up the envelope the next week or month to put their tithe in the offering again. "Diezmos" is the word for tithe. By the end of the 4 days of working on it, I was wishing I had a sewing machine...or at least a good thimble...sore fingers in the end, but a beautiful "Diezmos center", if you ask me.

Glasses for Felix

Well, we had quite the busy week last week. Most of our days were rearranged for us, but that is fine; it makes life more interesting! Saturday was a special day. We went to see Felix for the second time. This time we were armed with glasses for Felix. Empe and I waited outside a few minutes while they got Felix ready to receive company. He is 80 years old. He was so glad to have company. Felix is a Christian, but because of his physical state, he is unable to leave the house to go to church. He fell and broke and his pelvis a few years ago and can’t afford surgery. The first week, he told us he couldn’t read his Bible anymore because he didn’t have glasses. So, we told him we would come back the next week and bring him glasses. When we entered his room we were surprised to see Felix was sitting up and ready for a visit. Empe told him we wanted to read some scripture with him, but we wanted to have him try glasses before that so that he could read along. We tried several different strength’s of glasses that were close to the one he thought was good. Once he tried the glasses and saw that he could read, he began to cry because he was so glad that he would be able to read his Bible again. His older daughter, Ruth, saw what we were doing, and said she was so glad he was getting glasses. She said when she would read her Bible she had to hold it far away, so we asked her if she wanted to try some glasses too. She asked if she could really have a pair. We said, “Of course. We want to help people.” So we gave Ruth a pair of glasses too, and now Felix can read his Bible again. He wasn’t able to see the really fine print in italics, but he could read the headings and verses. So when we left him, Felix was encouraged in the Lord and happy that he would be able to read his Bible once again. Please keep praying for Felix and his family. Although there is no way possible to afford the surgery he needs for his pelvis, and now the doctors say he has bone cancer as well, we know that if it is His will, God can heal, or at least relieve the physical pain.

Fun on the Job!

We had our second Sunday School class on Sunday and had 20 kids. The first week we had 5 because it was the anniversary of Yarinacocha, so all the kids from the school had to participate in the festivities. But the second week, all the houses we visited sent their kids. Actually, there were 22 kids because Landon and Isaiah Foster were there too, but 20 kids from the neighborhood. We talked about the Moses and the plagues, so each child got a temporary tattoo of a bug, frog, or fish. Next week we are talking about Moses leading the Israelite out of Egypt, so we are going to play follow the leader. We have all ages from 3 to 12, but even the 12 year olds love the stuff because so much of the time they have to take care of their younger siblings, that they don’t get to do kid stuff. They especially like the coloring.
So, this week we have had lots of discipleship classes. We met Flor de Maria for her third lesson, and again today for her fourth. Also, on Tuesday, we started meeting with Ruth for lessons. We met with her on Wednesday as well, and meet with her again today too. Then, on Wednesday, we met with Rosalina and Maria, and on Friday we will meet with them again, along with Rosalina’s sister and niece, who came on Wednesday but got there a little late. Last Saturday we met with Maria (a different one), and her sister, Josefa. Their sister-in-law, who already attends am evangelical church with her husband, and mother came too. So the discipleship is going well.
Yesterday, we also visited with Oscar and his daughter-in-law, Maria. If you haven’t realized it by now, Maria is a very common name for all ages. Anyway, Oscar has been a Christian for a long time, and he is very interested in the Church of the Nazarene. He and Maria traveled to the District church, here where we live, for the Sunday morning Sunday School last week. He said they are planning to come this Sunday night too. This coming Sunday night is a special celebration service where we have asked all the people who we have had contact with to come to the “Mother church”, which for us it the district church, to meet others who are involved in the Nazarene church, and to get to be in a service, since we haven’t started having services in our areas yet. I’m excited to see how many of our contacts come.
Kristy and Nancy have had pretty good success with contacts and discipleship in Laura Bozo as well, but they boys are having a difficult time. Please pray for Kevin and Samuel in Manantay and Tim and Daniel in Arenal.

First Things First

Okay, so we have started our blog...we decided to do one together and just have entries in English and Spanish. We aren't exactly sure what it is going to be like, but we will be trying to keep it updated. So we have been working in Yarinacocha for one week. We like our area, and we may have had it a little easier for the first part. Our area had one of the clinics in February, so we had contacts to start with. Today we had a group from Point Loma here, so they went to our locations with us. We had 5 with us. We visited three houses. We visited Maria (she is the older lady I am with here, but the picture if from the other day), and two other houses. There is also a picture here with the Point Loma group that went with Empe and me. Also, here is a photo of the school we are using for the first month of Sunday School with our announcement. There will be more pictures with Empe's blog in Spanish...but even if you don't speak Spanish, look at the pictures.
